School Objective

The primary goal of our dance education classes is to create a positive environment in which students may feel secure, and develop into quality dancers that are both physically and mentally healthy. The rules and policies set forth are for the safety and well-being of all our dancers, as well as to provide each student with a quality learning environment.

General Rules

  • Dancers are to remain in the lobby area when waiting for their class to begin.
  • Dancers should be polite and respectful to their teacher and other dancers in the class.
  • No food or drinks in the dance room (except for water).
  • No gum chewing or eating during class.
  • Child’s name should be placed inside dance bags and all shoes.
  • Students must be prompt to all classes.  If the student misses warm up, they may be asked to observe only for safety reasons.
  • Young students need to be accompanied by an adult between the parking area and waiting room.

Note To Parents Of Younger Children: arriving too early before class can cause anxiety in very young students. A prompt pick up after class cannot be stressed enough. A student worrying about being “forgotten” can destroy a wonderful class experience.

Parent Communication

Periodically, PDC will send post newsletters on the internet on our website with announcements concerning upcoming events, holidays, etc. We will also post this information in our lobby. It is the parent’s responsibility obtain this information. Please check in occasionally to be sure you don’t miss out.

Dress Code

BEG thru ADV. II and ALL LEVEL CLASSES

  • All Students must be in dancewear while attending Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Tap, Modern and Tumbling classes. Girls are required to wear leotard and tights in the color of their choice. Biketards are acceptable for Beg, Int & Adv Classes.
  • Dance/Cheer Shorts may be worn over tights and leotard for modesty. Ballet skirts may be worn for ballet & pointe, jazz pants/capris may be worn for all other classes.
  • Hair must be worn pulled up and away from the face, bun is preferred for ballet - ponytail for jazz.
  • No excessive jewelry.
  • Costumes may not be worn to class except during specified classes throughout the year.
  • Appropriate shoes should be worn for all classes. Pink slippers for ballet and black jazz shoes for jazz (slip-ons preferred). Tap class requires black tap shoes (elastic is preferred in children’s shoes). Tumbling class requires children to be barefoot.

Hip Hop Classes

  • Students should dress comfortably in clothes they can move in, dance attire is encouraged. Clothing should be free of zippers, snaps and buttons. No jeans, “short shorts” or bare midriffs.
  • Hip Hop class requires tennis shoes (clean and free of sand!)

Creative Movement, All Pre Classes and Gym Jam

  • While dance attire is encouraged for these classes it is not mandatory. All children should wear comfortable clothing that they can move in. Clothing should be free of zippers, snaps and buttons. Any skirts or tutus should be above the knee.
  • Children should wear socks or ballet slippers (pink is preferred) for Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet and Pre-Jazz. Children need black tap shoes for Pre-Tap class (elastic is preferred on children’s shoes). Children should wear ballet slippers or be barefoot for Gym Jam class (no tights on feet).
  • Hair should be pulled away from face, ponytail is preferred.
  • No excessive or dangling jewelry.
  • When dressing your child for class, please keep in mind that they are very active during class time and long skirts, costume accessories or jewelry, especially bracelets or necklaces, may make some parts of class very difficult for them to enjoy.

Viewing Classes

Our lobby is open for viewing classes at any time. We ask that all viewers be quiet and courteous, as not to distract the students or teacher. The curtain may be pulled to help focus younger children during class time.

Injury/Illness

We rely on parents to make decisions regarding class attendance when your child is ill. We ask that you consider the health of the other students and the teacher. In addition, dance is physically demanding and partial participation is not as beneficial as an alternate make up class when the student is fully recovered. A student with an injury, however, is encouraged to observe class. Students should inform their instructors of any recent illness, injury or other medical conditions that may affect performance. All medication and therapeutic equipment are the responsibility of the parent/student.

Make-up Classes

If a student must a miss class for any reason, classes may be made up in another appropriate class within 30 days of the absence. Ask your teacher which class you should take for make-up. Payment for missed classes will not be refunded, but time for make-up classes may be extended in cases of extenuating circumstances with the approval of the school director.

Withdrawal

As a courtesy, if for any reason your child must withdraw from the program during the year, please notify the school director in person, by phone or in writing. No refunds will be given for registration fees, tuition or costume fees.

Hurricane Policy

In the event Brevard County is threatened by a hurricane, the school will close with the Brevard County Public School system for the purposes of evacuation. The school will re-open as soon as possible after the threat of the storm has passed. The school answering machine will be updated with information regarding closures and openings.

Dancing in our studio is a privilege.

Precision Contemporary Dance reserves the right to dismiss any student whose attitude or conduct is unsatisfactory.

This also applies to parental behavior.

Terri Rami, School Administrator at (321) 433-0420.

Thank you for choosing our school, we hope you have wonderful year with us.

Class Descriptions

It is our belief that every student deserves and receives quality instruction, positive encouragement and individual attention. The basis of our teaching methods is enjoyment through learning. We emphasize the learning experience and motivate students to reach their own potential.

At PCD all children under the age of 10 are grouped into classes by age and ability. Children learn very quickly and will not be behind in class due to lack of dance experience. Occasionally a child having natural ability or previous training may be moved up a level in order not to suspend the learning cycle however, this happens only on rare occasions! Class placement is at the discretion of the teacher and/or director. Child should be her/his stated age as of September 1st. Please respect our professional judgment.

Creative Movement - Creative Movement is a positive, developmentally appropriate beginning dance education class for young children (2 year olds and 3 year olds new to dance). Fun is the key as your child learns body awareness, motor skills and rhythm patterns, along with imaginative and creative activities.

Pre-Tap/Jazz I & Pre-Ballet I - Intended for 3 year olds and 4 year olds new to dance. Pre -I classes will present basic skills and will acquaint students with beginning ballet/jazz/tap movement techniques A basic knowledge of dance, music and rhythm, and movement vocabulary will be taught while students increase coordination, control and skill level.

Pre-Tap/Jazz II & Pre-Ballet II - Intended for 4 year olds with dance experience, pre -II classes are a continuation of Pre I classes.

Gym Jam - Intended for 3 and 4 year olds. Students will build body awareness, motor skills and self-confidence while learning basic tumbling and balancing skills.

The classes listed below will each introduce basic vocabulary and technique skills at an age appropriate level while building self-confidence and healthy habits. Children with no dance experience may enter these classes.

Beg Ballet or Jazz- For Kindergarteners.

Int Ballet or Jazz - For 1st graders.

Adv Ballet or Jazz I- For 2nd graders.

Adv Ballet or Jazz II - For 3rd graders and 4th graders with little or no dance experience.

At PCD, students ages 10 and older are placed in classes according to levels. Students are individually placed in classes according to skill level, ability, experience and attitude. Students transferring from other schools are placed in a class for evaluation based on their previous dance history. Students do not move up to the next level according to the amount of years that they have studied dance.  They must be able to execute proper technique for each movement for that level. Once the teacher or director has determined that the student is ready to move up, then and only then will they be able to do so. Some students may take several years and others only one, according to natural ability, effort, and practice.

Ballet & Jazz - Level I, II, III and IV

Modern - Any student Level I or higher may take Modern class.

Pointe/Pre-Pointe - A student may begin pointe class only with the approval of the teacher and/or director. Students will be assessed for pointe only when proper strength in the ankles and feet has been achieved and the growth plates are closed. This may require an x-ray taken by a physician. Normally, a student is 12 years of age or older.

Each fall PCD opens with a full schedule. Class schedule is subject to change. After approximately 4 weeks of class, any class with fewer than 4 students is subject to cancellation. Any students in those classes will be moved to another appropriate class.

Fall classes are concluded in May with our annual recital performance. For those student who wish to continue their dance education throughout the summer, PCD offers a reduced schedule of afternoon classes, as well as a variety of specialized camps and workshops.

Dance, in its fullest meaning, is a performing art. One of the most exciting, fun and valuable experiences for the dance student is the extension from the classroom to the stage, which comes at our annual performance at the end of the year in May. While recital is optional for all students, performing is the incentive for students to perfect their work and provides the opportunity for them to develop self confidence and self esteem.

We will let you know the exact date and location by November so you can plan ahead. To that end, we need to know no later than December 15th if your dancer is going to participate in the recital so that costumes may be ordered during December vacation. Early ordering ensures on-time delivery and saves you money by taking advantage of incentives offered by the costume company. Costume fees will be assessed per class and be kept reasonable. When costumes are posted, we will also post the color of tights ands shoes that are also needed. Parents may make payments towards your child’s account, but we must have the costume fees in full no later December 20th. If payment is not made in full, a costume will not be ordered for your child. Costume fees are non-refundable.

Recital Pictures

To benefit our families we do have a Picture Day where by a professional photographer will come into the studio and take both class and individual pictures. Participation in Picture Day as well as purchasing pictures are optional.

Recital Photography & Videotaping Policy

PCD does not allow audience members to video tape or photograph students on stage during dress rehearsal or the recital performance. This policy is for the safety of your children. Young children and inexperienced performers can be easily distracted by numerous cameras in the audience, trying to find one in front of their mom or dad. Furthermore, our recital performances are open to the public, therefore it would be difficult to monitor all video camera activity in the audience. We do open the stage to allow parents to photograph their children in between dress rehearsal and after the recital performance.

We offer for purchase a professional video tape of the recital performance. There is a photo/video release that we will ask you to sign upon registration for these activities. It is part of your registration form. Parent or Guardian must give consent for child to be photographed or videotaped in order to participate in recital performance. Any photographs or video footage that is taken is used for recital purposes only and is never used for promotional purposes, such as newspaper/magazine publications or internet website.
